Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: January 11, 2019

It was a bit windy and rainy this past week but despite the weather we got out there and got into some fish! As per my past reports, there isn’t one particular spot that is out producing, it has been more about where you can hide from the wind. Then you need to put in your time, and as usual you will be rewarded with your fair share of opportunities. Speaking of the wind and rain, it looks like this weekend we are going to get a break from that and the long term forecast looks pretty good as well with sunny days ahead. This might give you the opportunity to head over to the Gulf Islands in search of winter chinook, which is usually…

Happy New Year to all our customers new and old! Here is to a great year in 2019 and lets hope for another good saltwater year. The New Year winter chinook fishing has been off to a solid start with good reports in all the major fishing areas such as Howe Sound, Gulf Islands, and right close to home in Vancouver Harbour. Some friends from Puget Sound also sent me some great shots of rather larger winter chinook as their season just opened up on Jan 1. Prawning has also been good, but crabbing continues to be slow as the traps have been full of undersize, so best to leave the crab traps at home right now and focus on prawns. It’s going to be…

Vancouver salmon fishing report

VANCOUVER SALTWATER SALMON FISHING REPORTS Well this is the last saltwater report for 2018 and all in all it was a good year. I think in the New Year I will do a review of the season and bring to light some of the issues we will be facing in 2019. For now though, lets talk about winter fishing. Here is your Vancouver salmon fishing report for Dec 28, 2018. We were out quite a bit this past week, on charters as well as personal fishing. I would classify the fishing as consistent. There are fish in all the popular spots, and if you put your time in you are going to get rewarded with your shots at some nice winter chinook. If I had…

Well that was a windy one on Thursday, with winds howling even in False Creek at our docks and reaching a speed of 120 km/h at Sandheads. Looks like there will be some strong SE winds this weekend, so take caution on where you choose to fish, but you should be plenty protected in Vancouver Harbour (especially on a SE). Speaking of Vancouver Harbour, there have been multiple reports of decent fishing. Much like Howe Sound, if you put in your time you will get the results. Perhaps the scenery isn’t as nice, but it is great option for those of us who are confined to fishing on the weekend and have to deal with the wind if we like it or not. Try from…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well the wet November weather is officially here, its just mid December, so it looks like we didn’t escape the mega rains after all. This is when the good rain gear pays off! If you are thinking of heading out this weekend, make sure to keep an eye on the forecast as there are some winds leading into the weekend in excess of 40 knots and you don’t see that too often in this neck of the woods. Later in the weekend the forecast doesn’t look too bad though, especially for Howe Sound, so it will depend on where your boat is moored in terms of how lumpy your ride to the fishing grounds is going to be. Yes, you…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well November 2018 is in the history books and compared to a lot of Novembers, I have to say the weather was pretty darn good and the fishing was decent too. Looking at December, let’s hope we get some more sunny days, calm seas, and aggressive winter chinook are on the horizon. Unfortunately for this weekend it looks pretty wet, as a low-pressure system is coming in and we are going to see some precipitation starting on the weekend and lasting into midweek before the sun comes back out. It looks like there are some significant SE winds coming along with it as well, and some outflow winds for Howe Sound too. So it isn’t going to be flat calm…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Fishing has been decent this past week in Howe Sound. Not a lot of numbers, but there has been some decent size ones to hand if you put your time in. Of course there are the usual undersize to keep you busy in between, so all in all, pretty standard fishing for this time of year. No fresh info from the Gulf Islands this past week, no surprise there as the winds weren’t favorable for a crossing on most days, and with the shorter days most anglers will stick closer to home. The conditions look decent this weekend, at least for the weather. As far as debris in the water, well there is a lot of that, making fishing in…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report I hope you got out last weekend as the weather and sea condition were amazing. It was sunny and flat calm for the most part and the fishing was pretty good as well. There were some nice fish taken in Howe Sound, with Saturday being particularly productive, but things slowed down quite a bit on Sunday. Over on the other side of the pond it was productive as well. I fished the Gulf Islands and was into a good number of undersize fish and some decent legal fish as well. I was there the weekend before and had similar action. Unfortunately the forecast for this weekend doesn’t look so good with a rainy low-pressure system being in place and SE…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report We had some guided trips this past week and I did some personal fishing as well and we can confirm there are fish spread throughout Howe Sound as well as some fish over at Galliano and Gabriola. This past week the fishing was actually pretty tough, it was definitely better a little earlier in the month, but that is classic winter chinook fishing. Here one day and gone the next. I don't wait for reports, I just look at the weather and go, and I make the report and I recommend you do the same. You can have one of your best days of the season one day and get skunked the next, that's how fast these fish move around....

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report We survived the downpours from last weekend and this weekend it looks like we will be rewarded with some sunny days and decent marine conditions as well. So if you are getting the itch to get out there, this could be a decent weekend to do it. This time of year we often get asked how the fishing is and I will be the first to tell you that reports in the winter don’t hold as much weight as they do in the summer where fish can be staging. The winter chinook season is a long one, from November to April, as different pushes of feeding chinook salmon come and go, in search of herring and anchovies in our local…
