Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report It has been an eventful week; where to start? The first few days of August are historically difficult to predict, that, and in combination with the sockeye opening that was announced on August 1st has everyone talking. Locally, we have had good numbers of coho during the week. In the morning hours, on the flood tide we have found them close to the mouth of the Capilano at 70-50 ft. on the riggers, and on the ebb we have done well along the West Vancouver coastline. The classic white hoochie setups have produced, but we have also had good numbers caught on spoons and anchovies. While the chinook run isn’t quite here in force yet, a good strategy is to…

His first coho salmon fishing trip was a success

SALTWATER FISHING REPORT     Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report: Cap Mouth up to Point Atkinson, West Vancouver Well it’s the last week of July and it really does fee like summer with hot days, NW winds, and some coho off W. Van. This past week saw some good action from the Cap Mouth up to Point Atkinson but there was hot and cold days for sure. There are definitely some schools of biting fish and definitely some schools of non-biting fish, so it can be frustrating. We have had good success on white hootchies and anchovies and productive rigger depths have been 30-65.   The numbers of fish along West Van will build in the coming weeks as more fish move in from the offshore…

clear skies

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well it’s the back end of July and there is a lot going on, so I think this week I am going to break it down by coho, chinook and sockeye Coho: It’s official; we are currently experiencing the best coho fishing in the Strait of Georgia since the mid 90’s. Lots of wild fish and lots of hatchery fish. For us the most productive spot has been out on the Hump. Just get out there and cover water and you will do well. The fish are basically in the top 60 feet of the water column so we are generally fishing 80 feet or shallower on the riggers, with plenty of fish up shallow. Wednesday I had one rigger…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORT Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report We had some good to great chinook fishing from Nanaimo down to Gabriola earlier in the week when the winds allowed us to get there on our 10-hour trips. It is great to see so many chinook around in these areas almost into mid July. I have to say; the chinook fishing in general has been stellar this year starting in April, all the way until now, except for a bit of a slow period late June.   If you step back and look at the season as a whole up to today, it has been an amazing April, May, June, and first half of July. I realize there are some chinook stocks of concern in other areas…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report We had a productive week out on the water for both chinook and coho in a variety of locations, so let’s get right down to business. When the winds have allowed we have crossed the Strait of Georgia and fished Gabriola and Nanaimo and have done well. There seems to be a good number of fish around, which is a bonus, as some years it starts to dry up late June, but not this year. I fished there 3 days this past week and Khoi had some trips there too. We both did well on splatter back hootchies in green, chartreuse, and blue combined with the same colour flashers with glow tape (STS, Lemon Lime, Phantom). An…

Vancouver salmon fishing and crabbing

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS   Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report As I am writing this report this morning at 5:00 am, just before I head down to the dock, it looks like I got lucky on the winds today. The strong wind warning has ended and that means I can get across to Gabriola or Nanaimo, and that is good news as that is where the best chinook fishing has been by far. We have been confined to local waters for most of the week, and even had to hide up Howe Sound on a few days with winds pushing 30 knots SE yesterday at one point. Locally there are a few chinook around, mostly off South Bowen from Cowan to Roger Curtis, but it was…

A good salmon will put a smile any anybody's face

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Fishing was pretty decent this past week with some success locally as well as decent fishing around Gabriola. The hotter fishing has been on the other side on the days we have been able to get there, so let’s start there. For the most part the fish have been fairly deep and we are fishing inshore on the structure. Depth of water can range from 120 to as deep as 240 and our gear is generally close to the bottom as that is where the bait is. Hootchies seem to be producing the best, in particular the blue splatter, green splatter, and chartreuse splatter hootchies with as 32-35 inch leader. Productive flashers have been blue glow, chartreuse…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report If you haven’t heard there are new regulations coming into effect today. Go to the link, but in short, our local waters have been reduced to 1 chinook salmon per day. I will be detailing how we arrived here in future reports, or perhaps in a separate email all together, but I need some time to gather my thoughts and present our customers with the facts. The quick version is this decision by DFO is irresponsible as they had the data and means to make much better decisions but chose to make broad regulation changes that will have major economic impact. This is largely a political decision so it looks like they are doing something to save…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report The fishing locally definitely picked up this week. If you read last weeks report you will remember we talked about the new moon and big tides. That has passed and this weeks tides were not as severe and the bite came back on. Let’s take a moment to talk about the Fraser as we are getting a lot of calls about the dirty water form the Fraser plume. Many anglers are assuming you can’t or won’t catch fish in these conditions. This is not true at all, I was out in the dirty water yesterday off Gabriola and we were well into the double digits for hook ups. This dirty fresh water floats on top and underneath…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: May 18, 2018

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Lets take a look at the last 7 days of fishing, as there were some major changes.   Last Friday, Saturday, and Sunday we had some great fishing, even in the big winds and rough sea conditions on the weekend. There were great catches around Roger Curtis, a few fish at Cowan, a few fish out on the Hump and we also had some hot action off the QA. Monday was also good if you were on the fish as they were in a pretty specific spot, and Eddie was on them indeed, with a double digit hook up day and a limit of 8 chinook to the boat. Then Tuesday came and things really took a turn for the worse….
