Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: March 22, 2019

chinook_fishing_vancouver

Well it is that time of year where there are a lot of options. I just spent a good 2 beers worth of time looking at past journal entries, emails, and pictures on my phone and comparing them to our trips this past week. There really is no “one spot” this time of year and you can literally hit fish at all the spots in Vancouver Harbor or Howe Sound, off South Bowen from Roger Curtis to Cowan, off the Hump or QA, or at Thrasher. That’s a lot of water to cover and it is all about being in the right place at the right time. The fish are really moving around a lot and the algae bloom has also started.   This bloom seems…

I am going to start off this weeks report with an update on where we are at with potential chinook conservation measures that may affect your ability to fish for or harvest a chinook this season. The Sport Fishing Institute has done a great job of summarizing this issue and recent events. Read the information below so you are informed and click on the links to see the proposal that was put forward to the Fisheries Minister by the Sport Fish Advisory Board (SFAB) in an effort to maintain access to chinook while meeting conservation requirements. If you wrote a letter re-send it to the Fisheries Minister now, and if you haven’t its not too late. This is critical and read below for more information….

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: March 8, 2019

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report The fishing this week definitely picked up, as it seemed like a fresh wave of fish came in around this new moon and the big tides. Luckily the big tide changes were at night and we enjoyed relatively mild tide changes during the day, always better for fishing. It was nice to get some more action and some larger fish as well. Some of our top producing flashers were Herring Aide in glow, Lemon Lime, Salty Dawg, and PA Custom in chartreuse. The water wasn’t as clear this week as previous weeks, about 35 feet of visibility, where earlier in the season we could see the flasher down about 55-65 feet. The brighter gear was definitely out producing this week…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Thanks to everyone who wrote letters to DFO, they are having an impact. If you haven’t done so already, go to last weeks report for details and send one in today! Fishing this past week was pretty consistent. Each day there seemed to be a pretty good bite on the top of the flood and into the first hour or two of the ebb. Looks like we have some morning low slacks for the weekend and high slacks in the afternoon and the tides look pretty mellow, so from that perspective things look promising. I wish I could say the same about the winds as it looks like the bigger outflows are back, especially on Sunday (at least at the…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report/DFO Proposed Management Measures

Winter_Chinook_Fishing_Double_Header

Here is the quick winter chinook report. The fishing has been consistent in the Harbour and in Howe Sound, much like the last few reports, but there are much more pressing matters to discuss, so read on… We have received a lot of calls these past 2 weeks about some of the proposed management measures for chinook in 2019. This is a complicated issue so I am going to do my best to explain it succinctly as well assist you in actions you need to take in order to preserve your recreational access to these fish. I know we are all very busy, but if you want to fish for chinook this year you best keep reading, read the DFO letter in the link, and…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well finally we have some sun in the forecast and this white stuff will hopefully go away. The winds might even back off enough today for me to get up Howe Sound. It’s 5 AM here in the Tonelli household and I am reviewing the forecast, typing up the report, then headed down to the dock for the first of 3 days of guiding. It looks like I am going to deal with some rain today, but that is not big deal compared to the freezing temperatures we have had out on the water this past week. Its already plus 3 this morning, I will take it! The fishing this past week was confined to Vancouver Harbour as we had…

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Well winter is finally here I guess.   I was hoping we would escape the sub zero temperatures and big outflow winds but that is exactly what we have lined up for this weekend, even a freezing spray warning for today. If you are going to head out, make sure to dress extra warm and be safe. If you are looking to keep warm, maybe stay off the water and head to the boat show! The fishing this past week was pretty good. It has been the usual pattern of putting in your time and getting your shots at fish, usually around the tide change. Howe Sound has been producing some fish and so has Vancouver Harbour around the Bell Buoy,…

Prawning_Trips_Vancouver
Another great day of prawning! Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report After some nice weather this past week we are back to a bit of wind and rain just in time for the Friday anglers, a brief sunny patch on Saturday and maybe even some light snow on Sunday. There was some decent action early in the week but things cooled down a bit later in Howe Sound with the arrival of a pod of orcas on Wednesday. I am writing this report at 5:00 am Friday, just before heading down to the dock for a day of guiding. It will be interesting to see if the fishing picks back up today or if this lower pressure system and orca presence slows the bite down as...

Howe_Sound_Fishing

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report This past week was a mixed bag of weather with wind, rain and some really bright sunny days. This weekend the forecast for both the Strait of Georgia and Howe Sound looks decent, with light winds forecasted for Saturday, and some NW winds for Sunday, and northerly outflow forecasted for Howe Sound. We are in the usual January/February weather pattern of consistent winter fishing where if you put in the time you are usually rewarded with a few nice chinook.  As always, using glow flashers and spoons, and keeping your gear close to the bottom is the way to go. If you are looking for a few go to combos this time of year I would recommend the following.  …

Well last weekend was one of those reminders of how special Vancouver is. Flat calm seas in our local waters, great guests, sun in the sky, chinook, prawns, and lots of laughs. It is these kind of days that make up for all the 40 knot winds and sideways rain! Speaking of rain, it looks like we are back to a mix of sun and cloud as the weekend approaches, and of course some rain. I will take the rain though, don’t forget about January 2017 when boats were frozen in their slips. It was so cold people were ice skating in Lost Lagoon the first time in 20 years. So rain, no problem and lets go fishing. The fishing has been pretty good too….
