Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Friday Nov 18, 2016

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Typical November weather, wet, cold and windy. We haven’t been on the water much this past week, instead opting to do some boat maintenance. As per last weeks report, there have been a few nice size winter chinook caught for this time of year. Prawning has also been decent. So if there is a break in the weather, we will be heading out. In the meantime, back to the boats to get them ready for the upcoming summer season. If you are heading out we just received some shipments of prawn gear so we have all the rope, traps, weights, and bait you need for a successful prawning season. We also have some glow 15 and 18 pound…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Friday Nov 11, 2016

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Well the rivers have been flooded so we haven’t been out chasing the salmon up on the Squamish or Vedder, but we have been out chasing some winter chinook.  The fishing is typical for this time of year, hit and miss, but we are encouraged by the number of undersize fish we are encountering.  This bodes well for early 2017.  The fish are also feeding on anchovies.  It seems the anchovies that showed up in the spring are still here and that means lots of food and fast growing chinook.  Some productive spoons have been the Skinny G, the Coho Killer, and Pesca 2.5.  All these spoons are fairly small and represent anchovies well.  You could go up…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report  We have been out on the water on a few charters this past week and have been catching a few winter chinook. As usual for these fish, they have been on the bottom, right where the herring are. We are often fishing in 150-250 feet of water so that means one rod per downrigger and 18 pound white glow cannonballs. These cannonballs keep your gear down deep during a fast troll and big tides. Productive flashers have been the Salty Dawg and Kinetic Series with a glow stripe. Good old green or chartreuse blades with silver tape on one side and glow on the other are good choices as well. We usually keep the bait in the freezer…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Despite the windy and rainy weather this past week we were out on the water on some 8-hour BC salmon fishing trips and we ventured out to our early season winter chinook spots. The action was encouraging for this time of year with lots of encounters of small chinook that will be of legal size in early 2017 and there were some legal chinook taken as well. It also looks like the anchovies that were around in the spring months are still here as some of the fish had anchovies in their bellies! There were some chum and a few coho taken at Sandheads this past week, but for the most part the season is a wrap for…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Friday Oct 21, 2016

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Well there isn’t too much to report on out in the saltwater this time of year.  There are a few winter chinook around and most of the fall migratory salmon, like coho, chinook, and chum, are well on their way up the rivers after all the recent rains.  So today we are going to talk about reels and specifically reel maintenance.  Each spring we get a lot of anglers who bring in their mooching reels to get fresh line for the upcoming season, only to find out there reel has sustained damage over the winter months.  Usually there is some corrosion or seized bearings, they have to send their reel in for repair, and spend money on new parts.  We can often…

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Well, all good things must come to an end and the sun is gone and the fall rains are here.  This marks the beginning of the end for our saltwater salmon season as the river anglers rejoice in the rain as the salmon move upstream on their spawning journeys.  There will be a few late chinook off the Cap mouth in the next few weeks and there will be some good pushes of coho down at the South Arm of the Fraser, but for the most part, the bulk of the summer salmon have come and gone.  By November it will be all over and we will be doing maintenance on the boats and dreaming about winter chinook…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Sept 30, 2016

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report This past week was a good one.  The rains stayed away for the most part, the skies were sunny, and most important of all some big chinook rolled in just as predicted.  Those who were lucky enough to be down at Sandheads on Saturday enjoyed some epic fishing for big white springs.  I wasn’t out that day (was away for a wedding) but the text reports were rolling in with lots of pictures of big fish.  The biggest fish I heard of was a 41 pounder, I saw the picture, and yes indeed it was a hog and was easily a tyee on high thirties to low forties!  This was the push of big white springs headed for…

VANCOUVER SALTWATER FISHING REPORT Well it looks like these winds are finally going to back off and at the time of writing this report the forecast is for winds light this weekend and mostly sunny. When you are lucky enough to get that kind of forecast in late September the place to be is the South Arm of the Fraser, aka Sandheads, the Green Can, or the White Light Ship. This time of year there are good number of large white springs on their way to the Harrison and Chilliwack Rivers that are hanging out in that area. Hanging out is probably not the best description, as we often catch these springs in the Chilliwack River with sea lice still attached. That tells us they…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Sept 16, 2016

SALTWATER FISHING REPORTS Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report Things have picked up nicely this week with some consistent catches of chinook and hatchery coho off the Capilano River mouth area.  This fishery really gets going about now and for the next 30 days as waves of chinook show up on the flood tide and stack up off the mouth of the Capilano River.  As mentioned there are some nice coho around as well.  We are forecasted to get some rain on Saturday and this should bring in even more fish, as they often will focus on the river mouth with a low-pressure system coming in and a dose of freshwater coming out of the now very low Capilano River.  If we get too much rain then…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Sept 9, 2016

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report This week was pretty slow as the red springs seem to have all gone up the Fraser and we haven’t had a decisive push of white springs show up yet.  This resulted in some spotty fishing this past week off the Bell Buoy, North Arm, T-10, and South Arm.  There were some fish caught at all of these spots but you had to have lady luck on your side and be at the right place at the right time and the bite was often very short as there simply was not a lot of fish around.  We usually get a good push of these larger white springs right about now, so we will see how the coming week shapes  up.  Also…
