Vancouver Saltwater Report: January 1 , 2016 Happy New Year!

Salmon_Vancouver

SALTWATER REPORT Finally the rain and wind backed off and our guides were able to get out and chase down some winter chinook! As mentioned in last weeks report, so far so good, as we are getting good reports pretty much from Campbell River down to Washington. We landed these two nice fish by keeping our gear close the bottom and covering lots of water. One of the keys to doing that is trolling fast and we recommend 18 LB cannonballs to keep the gear down on a fast troll. A couple of nice winter chinook from this week. Last year we had some exceptional winter chinook fishing in early to mid January so if you would like to book a trip, please contact us…

Summer Has Arrived!

Summer fishing has arrived

Local Saltwater Summer Fishing We have been hitting Thrasher hard the last few weeks of summer in search of chinook. Dimitri, Eddie, and I have had the Grady’s busy this past week and fishing has been hit or miss. One day we hit Thrasher and the fish are co-operating, the next they seem to disappear. The best depths have been 120-180 and fairly close to shore, up on the structure. The best lures have been spoons and hootchies. More specifically the Pesca Leprechaun and Bogart in 3.5 and 4.0 when it comes to spoons, and for hootchies the spatter back in green, chartreuse, or blue have been working well. During the summer when the water has been clean we have been doing very well using…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: Big Fish and Big Smiles!

Vancouver salmon fishing report

Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report Here is your Vancouver salmon fishing report for May 8, 2014. The time to go after chinook is now!  I could end the report right there, but that would be pretty boring.  In short though, the fishing has been red hot over on the other side of the Strait of Georgia with excellent reports from Nanaimo down to Thrasher, down to Porlier.  Anglers have been fishing from 200 feet to 1500 feet offshore and getting fish as shallow as 40 and as deep as 180.  So what does this all mean?  It means there are a huge amount of chinook in the Strait right now and you should be booking a charter ASAP or getting out on your own boat….

Nice weather, prawns and chinook!

nice weather for fishing

Eddie Matthei: After an interesting week of weather with wind and even a good a good dump of snow I finally got back on the water with some nice weather. My opportunity came in the way of a very good fishing buddy taking me out on his new ride. A brand new very nicely equipped 27′ Aluminum Kingfisher. The weather had turned from overcast and snow to sunny and quite mild overnight as we set out on our shake down cruise in the morning. After dropping the prawn traps we doubled back to start of the QB marker. We found a lot of bait and arches indicating fish but no takers. We had arrived a little late for the first low tide and trolled towards…

Chinook Fishing is HOT!

2 guys chinook fishing

The chinook fishing continues to be good to outstanding at the Bell Buoy, North Arm, T-10 and South Arm.  If you have some time to get out fishing or book a charter with us, I suggest  you do it now.  The big chinook are here with more on the way in the next two weeks. I was out on a charter the other day, one of my favourites, the father and son charter!  I love watching kids get so excited about fishing.  Dad, Ben, and Tyler, had a great trip with us.  It is fun as a guide when the kids keep asking Dad how much time they have left on the charter because they don’t want it to end.  Even better when they start…

The Chinook Salmon Are Here & Pesca RSG Spoons!

Chinook salmon

The chinook salmon fishing has really picked up over the past 7 days with some frantic action in the last 2-3 days.  We are experiencing good to great chinook fishing off the Bell Buoy on our 5 hour and 8 hour charters and some equally good fishing on our 8 hour and 10 hour charters down to T-10 and Sandheads. We have had some days where we have hooked as many as 12 chinook on a tide change down at T-10.  This Thursday (Aug 15th) we hooked multiple chinook at the Bell Buoy in the morning and again in the afternoon.  There are some pink salmon in the mix as well, a few sockeye (please release carefully) and the odd wild coho and hatchery coho….

Vancouver Winter Chinook are Here!

chinook fishing

We were out fishing for chinook salmon Wednesday and what a beautiful day!  When I looked at the forecast on Monday it was calling for gale force winds on Wednesday and when I saw the rain on Tuesday, I must admit, I wasn’t sure if we would make the charter on Wednesday.  Luckily the forecast changed and by Wednesday morning we had a nice sunny day and flat calm seas as we headed out around 10:00 am  for some winter chinook. We spent most of the day trolling just off the bottom in 90 to 110 feet of water from the mouth of the Cap up to the Pink Apartment.  We saw a few bait balls, nothing huge or consistent, but none the less we…

Winter Chinook Fishing in Vancouver

winter chinook

It is that time of year where we head out in search of winter chinook.  Many of our local customers and tourists alike are surprised that we can catch salmon this time of year, but it is true!  Aggressive feeding chinook salmon, commonly referred to as “feeder springs” (spring is a common name for chinook) or “winter springs” enter our local waters from November to May. For many this is a special time to be out on the water.  The crowds are gone, the water is clear, the air is crisp, and the fish are feisty.  An added bonus is the crabbing and prawning is generally excellent in the winter and spring months.  Throw in a few hard fighting chinook salmon and it makes for…
