Beach Fishing Overview The Capilano river levels play a huge effect on the beach fishing scenario.The river has been really low for a while so we will have to see if this rain is going to rise the river level or not, however the tides are not in our favor to fish off the beach until Thursday when the tide goes lower than 6 feet again. SALTWATER REPORTS Beach Fishing Report It is that time again to get your beach fishing tackle ready as the coho salmon will start accumulating in our estuary at the mouth of the Capilano River. The river is low and will probably stay like that as there is no rain in the forecast. Some coho have been caught already with gear, so as more fish start milling around the chance of catching them on the fly increases. VANCOUVER SALTWATER REPORT There is a lot to talk about this week so let’s just jump right into it. The bait continues to move around the South Bowen and Gibson area. Where you find bait you find chinook and coho. It is pretty much that simple. Now being in the right place at the right time, not so much! Add some orcas into the mix and you have a recipe for some highly variable fishing. When the whales haven’t crashed the party and the bait is around, the fishing sure has been good. Well the fishing on South Bowen from Cowan Point to Roger Curtis continued to be good this past week. Saturday in particular was very good, Sunday was slow, but then it picked up again mid week. The chinook, and now plentiful coho, seem to be full of anchovies for the most part. The bait has been fairly shallow and so are the salmon. Hot depths have been 20-80 on the riggers with 35, 45, 55, 65 being hot. Try shallower when it is overcast and deeper when it is sunny. Well you know it is starting to get warm out when the NW winds show up! Just like last year, the NW winds have often gotten in the way of the run across the pond to Gabriola and Nanaimo. Our boats have been out on the water a ton lately and things have been interesting. We had some amazing shallow water fishing off Bowen island last week with guys catching fish 20 ft below the boat! This is super rare for our local fishery and a result of lots of bait. Another nice surprise has been the number of coho in the local waters. We have caught them on a number of charters and there have even been a few big ones! It has been an interesting week of fishing with a number of good reports. We heard of a couple really big fish, great number days, and a few tough reports mixed in. We would like to see more big number days but we have been seeing lots of bait everywhere and the general consensus is that it is spreading the fish out. Good levels of bait should be a good thing for the future of the fishery but it might make dialing in the spots a little more challenging. This past week we caught fish in a variety of locations including the Hump, QA, Bell Buoy, Howe Sound, and Thrasher Rock. The Hump is usually the place to be this time of year and should be peaking right now, but for whatever reason it has not been as good as previous years.
