VANCOUVER SALTWATER FISHING REPORT: May 13, 2016

Fishing spoons around the Vancouver area has become very popular over the last decade in part to a number of top guides putting in the time to tweak and perfect their favorite colors, paint recipes and shapes. For the average angler the selection can be overwhelming and much of what you hear is more hype for the fisherman than design for catching fish. The old saying that you could catch chinook on car keys or a bent table spoon is true. I have seen it happen. When an angler who understands the fishery is out on the water he will catch fish on pretty much anything he puts down. That said there is no way to argue that color and shape matters when one…

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report: May 5, 2016

This past week we caught fish in a variety of locations including the Hump, QA, Bell Buoy, Howe Sound, and Thrasher Rock. The Hump is usually the place to be this time of year and should be peaking right now, but for whatever reason it has not been as good as previous years.  This could quickly change as we often have good to excellent fishing on the Hump in the first two weeks of May.  There have been a lot more fish showing up in the Nanaimo area so there could be some more fish coming down our way on this side of the Strait of Georgia and this would make things pick up on the Hump. There have also been some fish caught off…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: April 29, 2016

Well it has certainly been an interesting week.  We were fully booked a lot of this week and that always makes for some interesting intel as we have multiple boats in multiple locations.  This week we fished the Bell Buoy, the QA, the Hump, Gower Point, Cape Roger Curtis, Cowan Point, Tunstall Bay, and Hole in the Wall. For the most part fish were caught at all of the above places but I have to give the hot spot of the week award to Hole in the Wall.  For whatever reason there were a lot of chinook there for about 4 days this week.  Now don’t go reading this report and head up there this afternoon or tomorrow, because a lot of those fish are…

VANCOUVER SALMON FISHING REPORT Well it was a slower start to the Hump season but the fish are definitely here now.  If lady luck has been on your side then you have had some pretty good fishing this past week.  The trick has been in the right place at the right time as the large school of chinook has been on the Hump, at the QA and also at the Bell.  The QA was good on the weekend, then the Hump was good mid week, then the Bell was good the last few days.  These are the same fish, just moving around with the tides and chasing bait. The most productive depths have been 90-130 and bait and spoons have been doing well.  We have…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report April 15th

Top Image: This chinook was caught this week off the Hump and had herring and a stickleback in its stomach. Well it is officially Hump season, but the fish don’t seem to know that.  In checking with our journals and fellow guides, it is well documented that the fishing off South Bowen on the Hump usually turns on around April 10 to 15.  Some seasons as early as April 4 and some as late as April 22.  So far the fishing has been pretty slow so it looks like it might be a little later start this year.  Don’t forget it can change in a hurry from slow to red hot, so hopefully that happens this weekend as we have multiple trips booked. There have…

VANCOUVER SALMON FISHING REPORT: April 1, 2016

Vancouver Saltwater Fishing Report Well, spring has sprung!  We are starting to get solid reports from chinook out on the Hump off South Bowen, a sure sign spring is in the air.  There have also been some nice winter chinook taken up Howe Sound as well as a few fish off the Bell Buoy. Without a doubt, the place to be in the next 6 weeks is going to be the Hump.  As early as April 4th we have had good to excellent fishing in this spot.  Usually it takes until around April 10th, but it seems more and more anglers are tying this spot earlier and earlier and finding some fish for their efforts.  You may have seen us on BC Outdoors Sportfishing TV…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: March 25, 2016

Well it was a pretty active week and weekend since our last report as a lot of fish rolled in!  On Saturday, the Bell Buoy looked like the August long weekend with at least 40 boats.  The herring were in the area and the chinook piled in as well.  It was some of the best early season fishing any of us have ever seen.  By best I mean that some limits were taken on the morning of Friday and Saturday on 5 hour charters.  That is good fishing anytime of the year but for March that is red hot.  Things slowed down considerably on Sunday as expected as the fishing was hot there on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.  A lot of fish ended up on…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: March 18, 2016

This week was much better for weather once that big storm system pushed through on Sunday.  There were some beauty days on the water mid week and we were happy to be out personal fishing as well as on charters. The harbour has been pretty darn good for a few weeks now with fish off W. Van shoreline in 90-120 feet of water, the Mile Markers and Bell Buoy in 90-130 feet of water and the Freighters in 120-140 feet of water.  The usual tactic of keeping your gear just off bottom and covering water has produced some chinook from just legal size all the way up to the high teens! Howe Sound continues to produce similar sized fish from just legal size up to…

Well the wind and the rain is here but so are some fish!  There has been good fishing for winter chinook in the harbour this past week.  There have been fish along W. Van on the flood and there has been fish off the Mile Markers and Bell Buoy on the flood and the ebb.  Howe Sound continues to produce some fish, but classic winter chinook fishing, hot one day and cold the next.  If you are in the right spot at the right time, the fish are getting big!  We have seen some fish in the 10 to 20 pound range this week.  The top baits haven’t changed much.  Pesca Spoons and Kingfisher Spoons that have some glow and some green in them are…

Vancouver Salmon Fishing Report: March 4, 2016

Vancouver Saltwater fishing Report We heard of some good reports this week from up Howe sound and near the bell in the harbor. One report was interesting with guys fishing large 4 inch Pesca spoons in the gut bomb and cluopia. This is interesting because most anglers focus on smaller spoons this time of year in the 2.5-3.0 inch size but the guys managed a good number of legal fish and the herring in their bellies were larger.  Seals still posed an issue in the harbour but we also saw some good keepers caught off the bell this week. It looks like there will be some wind in the forecast this weekend so check your weather reports before heading out. The tides look good in…
