VANCOUVER SALTWATER FISHING REPORT The season is now in full swing and as mentioned in the last report, there has been good fishing from Washington up to Campbell River. A little closer to home, right in the harbor along the West Van shoreline, there were some decent reports this past week. In fact the fishing in the harbor was as active or more active than Howe Sound on some days, with undersize and some nice legal size fishing providing good action. Unfortunately this week the seals were an issue and anglers that were into legal size fish were losing them to seals. Vancouver Saltwater Report: January 1 , 2016 Happy New Year!
SALTWATER REPORT Finally the rain and wind backed off and our guides were able to get out and chase down some winter chinook! As mentioned in last weeks report, so far so good, as we are getting good reports pretty much from Campbell River down to Washington. We landed these two nice fish by keeping our gear close the bottom and covering lots of water. One of the keys to doing that is trolling fast and we recommend 18 LB cannonballs to keep the gear down on a fast troll. A couple of nice winter chinook from this week. Beach Fishing Last week the tides were not the best to fish off the beach but a few fish were caught on gear off the jetty. I saw a lot of fish where we would normally be able to stand close enough and fish for them on a day with suitable tides. The persistent winds offshore have prevented everyone from fishing almost everywhere but hole in the wall. Although it hasn’t been hot fishing yet there are certainly a few nice fish around with a 24lb’r topping the chart. Productive depths are in the 100ft range with one day producing fish at 50ft. In terms of tackle Homeland Security, Pesca Gut Bomb in both the 3″ and 4″, Irish cream and bait have been working best. Thrasher Rock has been fishing great this past week. The Grande and Thrasher reef have been producing some nice chinook. Anglers who are willing to take a chance and venture out off shore have been greatly rewarded with some fast paced fishing once they have located fish. We have been hitting our fish from 75ft down to 135ft on the riggers on a mixture of spoons and hootchies. Productive flashers have had some glow on them as the water has been pretty dirty. I could end the report right there, but that would be pretty boring. In short though, the fishing has been red hot over on the other side of the Strait of Georgia with excellent reports from Nanaimo down to Thrasher, down to Porlier. Anglers have been fishing from 200 feet to 1500 feet offshore and getting fish as shallow as 40 and as deep as 180. So what does this all mean? Eddie Matthei: After an interesting week of weather with wind and even a good a good dump of snow I finally got back on the water with some nice weather. My opportunity came in the way of a very good fishing buddy taking me out on his new ride. A brand new very nicely equipped 27′ Aluminum Kingfisher. The weather had turned from overcast and snow to sunny and quite mild overnight as we set out on our shake down cruise in the morning.
