January 3: Salmon Fishing in Vancouver!!!

What a magnificent day on the water! We headed out on our 38 foot Uniflite, appropriately named the “SEASTAR” at the crack of 10 am this morning. Hey, it’s not like we were on a schedule—today was about great scenery and sunshine! For those who don’t know already, the SEASTAR is the epitome of fishing comfort in Vancouver. Yours truly deckhanded/guided today (I picked the top secret prawn spot and where to drop the lines) while Captain Eddie, Captain Preston and guests Dave and Andrew B had fun at my expense (that’s ok guys–it’s all in GOOD fun).  The water was flat calm and it was a magnificent  sunny day on the water—and warm too! On our way out we dropped a few crab traps, headed out to our prawning hot spots and dropped a few prawn traps and then headed to winter spring hang out TUNSTALL BAY on the West Side of Bowen Island which we had all to ourselves! Bonus! We promptly got the lines in the water and on the first pass within 20 minutes of starting fishing we landed a CHUNKY 11 lb Chinook Salmon right at slack tide. We made a few short passes and landed a few undesirables, a Tommy Cod, a Pacific Cod and a Flounder, all of which we released. We encountered lots of bait schools and surprisingly, we didn’t hook any other fish. We then decided to head back to pull up the Prawn Traps and with a short soak time, the results were FANTASTIC…500 Medium Size Prawns! YUM! Definitely a wonderful set for this time of year! (Edited: I originally wrote 350 but after tallying up the meals, it was closer to 500 prawns). After stowing the prawn gear, we then went to pull the Crab Pots and kept a half dozen large DUNGENESS crabs! What a day! The scenery was magnificent today with clear unobstructed views of the mountains, sunshine, flat calm water,  Bald Eagles soaring overhead (and a few spying on us from the trees of Bowen Island), a sighting of a flock of about 500 Common Puffins and us getting away from the city for a while. For larger groups or those wanting the luxurious comfort of a heated cabin, THE SEASTAR is your choice for entertaining friends and family or hosting your business associates in an activity based setting! Sit back and relax—the SEASTAR offers an expansive back deck, 4 downriggers, vacuflush washroom facilities, a full expansive galley, lounge seating, a scenic bridge and the most comfortable fishing platform in our fleet. The SEASTAR is a great choice for a half day adventure and really in it’s element and ideally suited to an extended day on the water!  The SEASTAR is chartered with 2 crew: an experienced Captain (usually a Pacific Angler Guide) and one of the Pacific Angler guides. The SEASTAR is equipped with state of the art navigation and fish finding equipment, up to date fishing gear, 4 electric downriggers, and seasoned Pacific Angler Guides who will work to get you onto fish!  For more information on the ultimate SEASTAR Salmon fishing experience–call us today!
