Monday Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Update, January 21

Well, it’s another winter Monday morning in beautiful Vancouver.  At this time of year most people are hitting the fresh powder on the slopes.  Few realize that this can be a great time of year to get on the water.  Flat calm seas, mild winter temperatures, and chrome winter chinook are reasons enough to grab an early morning coffee and head out on the water.

And that is exactly what Jason did this past Saturday.  The conditions were perfect with light wind conditions and a perfect gentle high slack tide at noon.  Jason, the “Salty Dawg”, and regular Pacific Angler customer Tony fished hard all day fishing locally within the Vancouver Harbour as well as in the Howe Sound area and Bowen Island.  Overall, fishing was slow with the odd fish being reported over the radio.  Jason did note a ton of bait being marked on the fish finder.  So the bait is there which usually means that the fish are somewhere out there.

This is part of one of the main challenges of fishing for winter chinook salmon.  Unlike the summer, the salmon are searching for food ferociously putting on weight in anticipation of the spawning migration in the summer.  This means that the salmon are not concentrated in one particular area consistently.  The key is to cover as much ground as possible hunting for these cruising fish.  When you find them, you know…normally by your rod tip pounding in the rod holder!

There is definitely a change in the weather this coming week.  The Vancouver weather forecast is calling for rain and cloudy conditions starting on Tuesday and continuing until Sunday.  You can expect milder conditions with daily high temperatures ranging from 6 to 7 degrees Celsius and daily low temperatures ranging from 0 to 5 degrees Celsius.  The Straight of Georgia marine forecast is calling for heavier winds this week.  You can expect southeast winds ranging from 5 to 15 knots.  On Thursday the forecast is calling for 20 to 30 knot winds.

On Wednesday we will talk in detail about what you can expect for Vancouver salmon fishing over the weekend.

If you would like to head out this week or weekend please do not hesitate to contact Pacific Angler’s dedicated booking manager Dave at the store on 78 East Broadway (604-872-2204).  Also, if you would like to talk fishing and see what the pros are using please do not hesitate to drop by the shop or talk to one of our friendly staff over the phone.

Happy Fishing!
